• Tell us about yourself. A love of nature inspired me to major in biology in college. The sudden death of my father at the end of my freshman year solidified a desire to become a naturalist as he was. I went on to become a scientist, a teacher and professor of public health at the University of Georgia and Georgia Southern University, until I retired in 2003. However, years of scientific training never diminished my need to create things.
• How long have you been creating enamel jewelry designs? I have been fabricating jewelry from silver for nine years now and making cloisonné enamels for four years. Creating cloisonné jewelry is an extremely time-consuming, meticulous process. Vitreous enamels are painted into cloisons (cells) of hand-formed silver wire, which are fused onto fine silver. Each piece is fired in the kiln from seven to 20 or more times, depending on the complexity of the design. I can complete four to six pieces a week working every day, from cutting the fine silver disks to the final polishings and settings.

Quartz Gemstones in Jewelry
If you’re a gemstone jewelry connoisseur, there’s a pretty good likelihood that you have quartz, the world’s fourth most scratchproof mineral, sitting in your jewelry box. The fact that it’s so durable makes it an ideal gemstone for everyday wear, and can be found in everything from watches, to earrings, to necklaces, rings and more.
Where is it found?
Quartz is the most common mineral on earth, and is easily found in almost any geographical location in the world. Because it’s so durable, it is the most prominent mineral of mountaintops as well as beaches, rivers, and even desert sand. Its prominence in nature and the fact that it’s so easily created by man, make it likely that it will be around forever.
What are the uses for quartz?
Quartz is invaluable even far beyond that of its use in gemstone jewelry . Its piezoelectric properties, a form of electrical energy created when applied with mechanical pressure, make it ideal for pressure gauges, oscillators, and wave stabilizers. Computers, cell phones, electronic games and many other electronic devices run because of its presence.
