I have a very old solitaire diamond engagement ring. It had belonged to my mother. I need to sell it at this time. If I bring it to a jeweler and he says he will give me $500, for example, should I just take it or see someone else for an appraisal?
The value of a diamond doesn't depreciate, from my knowledge. I would suggest you go to multiple jewelers and get an appraisal to see what the diamond is worth. Try to get the GIA rating, if possible- it's the most credible report out there.

Gold shouldn't tarnish ... at least not over a couple of months. The lower the gold content the likely it will do. I would say that the ring is not gold, very low gold content, or maybe even gold layered. I would take it to another jewellers to find
