Solve the problem.
Anne and Nancy use a metal alloy that is 24.9% copper to make jewelry. How many ounces of a 20% alloy must be mixed with a 27% alloy to form 100 ounces of the desired alloy?
Ounces of 20% alloy = x
Ounces of 27% alloy = y
x + y = 100
0.20x + 0.27y = 0.249(100)
x + y = 100
0.20x + 0.27y = 24.9
-0.27(x + y = 100)
0.20x + 0.27y = 24.9
-0.27x

let x = ounces of 20% alloy
let y = ounces of 27% alloy
x + y = 100
.2x + .27y = .249(x + y)
x = 100 - y
.2(100 - y) + .27y = .249 * 100
20 - .2y + .27y = 24.9
.07y = 4.9
y = 70
